Physical therapy for MS patients is a
complicated endeavor for all the usual reasons.
MS symptoms vary with each patient and it
is a very dynamic disease. There is not a one-
size-fits-all program and needs change from
day to day – even from morning to afternoon.
The goal with therapy is to stay healthy and
maintain a consistent level of function that
hopefully should improve your quality of life.
After PT sessions from a licensed physical
therapist, you will most likely need to follow
up with home therapy, either on your own or
with help. It is strongly advised to work with
your care team to make sure you stay safe,
and the routines are appropriate for your current
ability level and medical condition.
Depending on your medical insurance, a
medical professional may be able to help you
navigate the complexities of insurance coverage.
This article will address the things that can
be done with minimal monetary investment
and space in your home. It is best to start
slow and adjust to your comfort level.

If you are working with a licensed PT, they
will provide exercises you can do at home in
between appointments and before follow-up
sessions. You may want to take pictures or make
a video of your home exercise environment to share
with your therapist so they can recommend
appropriate routines.
Some PT practices have technological apps
available for this purpose. However, most PTs
will provide you with printed copies of your
regime. Ask your therapist to email you the
printed copies so you can view them digitally or
take photos, so you have it on your phone.
Many exercises can be done with a chair or
a mat, but you may want to purchase some
basic equipment. For example, Thera-Bands, a
balance ball, or blocks are very helpful and do
not require a lot of space to use and store. Your
therapist will aid you in this endeavor. Generally,
this type of equipment can be found relatively
inexpensively online.

There are many sites that address exercise
and MS. Computers and mobile device
screens are small so connecting your device
to your TV for easy viewing while exercising
is recommended, especially if you have
vision issues.
A simple search in your favorite browser
or YouTube for “MS exercise programs” will
lead you to great resources. The advantage of
YouTube is the results are in video format.
You can proceed at your own pace and stop
and start as needed. Narrowing your search to
your specific needs and abilities is suggested.
Including phrases for exercises for your
equipment such as chair, mat, or ball can
also be useful. To refine it further, you can
