The organization’s first home was a small office above a cosmetology school. Perms were a popular look in the 1980s, and for many years our files smelled of the chemicals used. 2. Havingourheadquartersinsunny Floridainfluencedourearlymotto: “A Brighter Tomorrow” and our logo mark: the sunrise viewed through a window. 3. The organization’s first site on the World WideWeb was MSFacts.org, a name meant to emphasize the factual, authoritative information available. Only later did we learn that some read it as MSF Acts, not MS Facts. 4. Staff members from every department are invited to sit on committees related to our services. Being given an opportunity to directly assist people with MS builds passion for our mission and increases job satisfaction. 5. MS Focus proudlypromotes diversityin the workplace. Thirty percent of our staff are persons of color. Individuals of all national andethnicbackgrounds,sexualorientations, and those with disabilities are welcomed. 6. Our employees range from young adults working theirwaythrough college to senior citizens, several in their seventies and eighties. 7. Fifty percent of senior management employees are female. 8. Ten percent of the full-time MS Focus staff are military veterans. 9. It is not uncommon to hear Spanish spoken in MS Focus headquarters. Other languages that are occasionally heard (or seen) include Yiddish, French Creole, and American Sign Language. 10. MS Focus is next to a canal that connects to a nearby aquatic preserve. Wildlife sightings are common on the grounds of our headquarters, including alligators, turtles, snakes, herons, raccoons, egrets, iguanas, and squirrels. 11. An alligator once became trapped in a drain pipe beneath our parking lot. The State of Florida removed the seven-foot reptile and relocated it to the Florida Everglades.
