Snow presents some major problems for us. There are two products I strongly recommend – I have been using them for years – that hugely increase safety and self reliance. In both cases, there are other similar items available. Yaktrax Walk – These are essentially twists of heavy duty wire and rubber which pull securely over shoes or boots. For snow, or mixed snow/ice/sleet, these give you substantial grip when walking. Hint - put them on your shoes/boots before putting them on. They won't damage your boots, since the part that pulls over the boots is rubber. Yaktrax are cheap – about $15 – and last for years. I keep two pairs – one for the house and one in the car, in case I get somewhere where there may be an uncleared sidewalk. No lift snow shovel – Snow shoveling is another biggie when it comes to winter safety. Years ago my son gave me a "shovel" which took almost all the work out of shoveling snow. The huge difference between this and a normal shovel is that you don't lift it. You push it into the snow and pull it out. Drag it to where you want to dump the snow and turn it over. You can do this with even the two feet of snow we just had! With heavy snow, always start at the location where you want to dump the snow and work toward the door. In a light snow, you can just push the snow in front of you from the door to the end of the path. Do a search using the words "snow shovel push" and there will be a lot of these. Some have wheels, but I found this basic one works fine and without the wheels there is one less thing to break. The super-wide handle like the one shown above is important; it makes flipping it over to dump the snow and controlling it much easier.
