In-houseworkshops are regularlyarranged to teach staff members about products, services, and wellness techniques that benefit peoplewith MS.At one memorable session on progressive relaxation techniques, three staff members learned the technique too well – and fell asleep! 13. We practice what we preach. Our focus on wellness extends to our staff, through programs for employees that promote healthy eating, exercise, and relaxation. For example, MS Focus Radio station manager Chris Hudspeth is a certified instructor for chair yoga, and holds brief classes for staff members at break times. 14. Our offices had to be closed because of damage from HurricaneWilma in October of 2005. It took one week for the building to be made safe and the power restored. Though many of our staff still had no powerathomeforanadditional7–10days, all staff members immediately returned to work when the building reopened, eager to help those in the MS community who may have been affected. 15. MS Focus was the first major MS organization to make use of the Internet. We first went online in 1993, when only 22 percent of homes had a computer, according to U.S. Census data. 16. Ourwebsite, www.msfocus.org, contained a library of videos about MS four years before the creation of YouTube. 17. More than 400 writers have contributed to MSFocus Magazine since its first issue in 1991. 18. Co-Executive DirectorJules Kuperberg is a game show fan. He was once a contestant on Jeopardy. Later, he was delighted to work with game show hosting legend Wink Martindale at one of our events. 19. The organization’s web address has appeared on quite a lot of famous stages. AssociateDirectorofQualityofLifePrograms Derrick Lee likes to wear his msfocus.org t-shirt when he plays with his band The Lee Boys. They frequently appear at the country’s biggest music festivals, including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. 20. We serve all 50 states and Puerto Rico without having chapters or regional offices. Serving the entire country from one location may not seem that unusual today, but before the availability of the Internet, we were frequently asked, “How on Earth do you do it?” 21. Recent surveys show that many nonprofit organizations struggle to keep staff members for more than three years. By contrast, a third of full-time MS Focus employees have been with us for ten years and more.
