For the past 15 years, Cherie has operated a home-based patient advocacy business helping people identify the questions to be asked of their healthcare team. She serves as a member of the MS Lived Experience Advisory Panel for MS Focus, and is the Patient Healthcare Liaison for the organization.Tyler Brown joined the Shepherd Center in August 2020 as a rehabilitation psychologist. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Medstar National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Brown has a passion for providing evidence-based treatment to individuals and their families dealing with a variety of complex medical conditions including SCI, ABI, MS, chronic pain, and amputation. In his free time, Dr. Brown enjoys college football, movies, and training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing.Maggie Courier is a retired high school english and journalism teacher in Margate, Fla. Diagnosed with MS in 1998, Maggie worked in marketing for MS Focus before becoming a teacher. Joanne Fortunato is a retired computer technology teacher in Venice, Fla. Diagnosed in 2006, she uses technology to cope with the many difficulties that MS can present. Herb Karpatkin is a board-certified neurologic clinical specialist, and a certified MS clinical specialist. He is an assistant professor of physical therapy at Hunter College and a medical advisor to MS Focus. His research has been published in the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Disability and Rehabilitation. He is the recipient of the 2015 American Physical Therapy Association Award for Excellence in Neurologic Education.Carrisa Sawyer is a neurorehabilitation psychology extern at the Shepherd Center and a second-year doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Psy.D. program at Mercer University. She received her master of arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and bachelor of arts in Psychology from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, La.
